Overview

Bonsai is the practice of growing full trees in miniature through pruning, wiring, and root management. It operates on a timescale of years and decades rather than seasons.

It is genuinely horticulture first and art second: a beautifully styled tree that is unhealthy will not survive to become anything.

Getting Started

Buy a nursery tree and practice pruning on it rather than starting with an expensive bonsai.

Keep outdoor species outdoors. Most bonsai sold as indoor plants die from being kept inside.

Learn watering before styling. Improper watering kills more bonsai than bad pruning ever will.

Join a local bonsai club. This hobby is very hard to learn from books alone.
