Overview
Quilting joins small fabric pieces into a top, layers it with batting and a backing, then stitches the layers together. It is a long-form craft: most quilts take weeks or months rather than an evening.
The appeal is the combination of geometric design and slow, methodical handwork, plus a quilting community that is famously generous with help and hand-me-down supplies.
Getting Started
Learn basic sewing first — quilting assumes you can sew an accurate seam.
Buy a rotary cutter, self-healing mat, and a quilting ruler. Accurate cutting is most of quilting.
Start with a simple patchwork square quilt or a table runner, not a king-size bed quilt.
Master the quarter-inch seam allowance. Quilting is unforgiving about seam consistency.
